Description
This fully wire-wrapped rosary has 8mm faceted ruby jade beads for the Aves, with red-and-pink rose tensha beads for Paters which are set off by silver-plated fluted bead caps and 3mm white shell pearls. The Aves have a beautiful depth of color in bright or subdued light.
The center is a vintage “Crusade” medal; on the front is the Sacred Head (Crowned with Thorns) with Alpha and Omega at east and west, and the IHS and Chi Rho Christograms at north and south. The reverse has Our Lady of Sorrows with the Star of Bethlehem above her, the fleur-de-lis symbolizing Our Lady’s purity (and France, ‘the eldest daughter of the Church’) below. The form of the background is called the Jerusalem Cross, hence the name ‘Crusade’ medal; this style of medal was often minted for Rosary Crusades in a parish or diocese.
The crucifix is an antique “Crucifix Fleurée”, ‘fleurée’ meaning ‘flowered’, as the ends of the arms blossom into flowers. The square ‘halo’ is very unusual. Both the center and are not marked as to metal content, and would be classified under the general term ‘pot metal’ which is usually some variant of pewter.
Sterling silver-filled wire (22 gauge) was used in this rosary.
